University Body Requires 25% Additional Seats for Foreign Students

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced guidelines to support the internationalization of Indian higher education institutions (HEIs), focusing on admissions and the creation of additional seats for international students.

According to the guidelines, HEIs are instructed to admit international students based on the equivalence of their entry qualifications. Transparent admission processes should be adopted by HEIs for international student admissions.

HEIs have the authority to establish up to 25% supernumerary seats for international students. The decision regarding these additional seats must adhere to specific guidelines and regulations issued by regulatory bodies, considering factors like infrastructure, faculty, and other requirements.

It's important to note that the 25% supernumerary seats exclude international students participating in exchange programs.

These supernumerary seats should be reserved exclusively for international students, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. If any seat remains vacant in this category, it cannot be allocated to any other applicant except an international student. The official notification defines international students as those holding foreign passports.

All HEIs are required to have an "Office for International Students" and must provide detailed information about countries, numbers, programs/subjects, durations, etc., on their official websites.
