Results Announced, Cabinet Meeting Scheduled for Tomorrow: What's Next?

The INDIA alliance is reportedly attempting to court the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal United (JDU). Meanwhile, the government formation process will commence tomorrow with the Union Cabinet scheduled to meet and propose the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha.

A Cabinet note will be prepared by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, and upon the Cabinet's recommendation, President Droupadi Murmu will dissolve the current lower house of Parliament. The Election Commission of India will then provide President Murmu with a list of elected MPs, initiating the process of constituting the 18th Lok Sabha.

Following the procedure, the President will invite the single largest pre-poll party formation, which in this case is the NDA, projected to win 292 seats. The NDA will need to demonstrate its majority on the floor of the house within a specified time period, potentially a month or less.

Despite the BJP, leading in 239 seats (including leads and wins), expressing confidence in forming the next government, the Congress and other INDIA allies have reportedly reached out to Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar.

Mr. Naidu's TDP is expected to win 16 seats, while Mr. Kumar's JDU is on course to secure 12 seats. These parties will be crucial for both sides in their efforts to form the next government.

Although NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar has denied reaching out to the leaders, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has hinted at "new partners."

The TDP-BJP alliance was solidified just before the elections, and experts had speculated that Mr. Naidu might switch sides if he perceived more advantages with the INDIA bloc. The TDP was part of the United Progressive Alliance in 2019.

Nitish Kumar's association with the Congress is even more recent; he played a key role in the creation of the INDIA bloc before rejoining the NDA in January. The Bihar Chief Minister had previously severed ties with the BJP ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections when the party declared Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate.

Both the NDA and INDIA are scheduled to hold meetings in New Delhi tomorrow.
