Summer Heat and Leg Cramps: Why They Are More Common

Most people associate leg cramps with cold weather, but surprisingly, they can be worse in summer. This is especially true for athletes, pregnant women, children, and older adults. Dr. Pramod Bhor, an orthopedic surgeon, emphasizes that these cramps shouldn't be ignored as they can be a sign of heat injury.

Why Summer Heat Increases Cramps

Summer's warm weather often leads to increased activity. People go on vacations, exercise outdoors more, and children play sports. This exertion in hot weather can cause muscle cramps due to overuse or injury. Additionally, sweating heavily leads to dehydration, which can worsen cramps.

Preventing Summer Leg Cramps

To avoid cramps, it's crucial to stay hydrated. Aim for 10-12 glasses of water daily, especially during exercise. You may also consider consulting your doctor about taking supplements like calcium, magnesium, and potassium, as deficiencies can contribute to cramps.

Responding to Leg Cramps

If you experience a cramp, gently stretch and massage the affected muscle. Applying a heating pad can also provide relief. In the case of nighttime cramps, stand on the affected leg while resting your heel on the floor to stretch the muscle. However, if the pain is severe, discontinue exercise and consult a doctor.

Cramps During Exercise

Be aware that cramps can occur during various activities like tennis, cricket, swimming, or any strenuous exercise. Listen to your body and take breaks when needed.
