Students in UP Pass Exams with 'Jai Shri Ram' Answers; Professors Face Suspension

First-year students at a university in Uttar Pradesh shocked authorities by reportedly inscribing 'Jai Shri Ram' and the names of cricketers in their answer sheets. However, this unconventional approach to exams soon led to consequences. Two professors from Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University in Jaunpur were suspended for allegedly accepting bribes from students in exchange for favorable marks, particularly on answer sheets adorned with songs, music, and religious slogans.

A student leader, Divyanshu Singh, raised concerns in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Governor, and Vice-Chancellor, alleging collusion between university officials and faculty to pass even those students who had originally received zero marks, granting them over 60 percent marks.

The irregularities came to light through an RTI response, exposing significant inconsistencies in marks during the re-evaluation of special bank copies.

Vice-Chancellor Vandana Singh confirmed the findings, stating that a committee investigation revealed students had been awarded excessive marks. Regarding the inclusion of religious slogans, she mentioned seeing an answer sheet where the content was unclear and did not justify the marks awarded.

The Raj Bhavan intervened, directing the university Vice-Chancellor to take appropriate action. Answer sheets reviewed by NDTV showed 'Jai Shri Ram' written amidst an answer discussing pharmacy as a career, alongside mentions of cricketers like Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.

In response, examiners Dr. Vinay Verma and Manish Gupta were suspended during an examination committee meeting.

While teachers received warnings to prevent such incidents in the future, termination was recommended for those directly involved. However, further action awaits the lifting of the model code of conduct.
