Student Voices Discontent: IIT Bombay Not the "Golden Gateway to Supreme Education," Claims Student

A first-year student at IIT Bombay has ignited a debate on social media by criticizing the teaching and grading methods of the premier institute. In a recent Reddit post, user 'dengo302005' expressed disappointment, stating that IIT Bombay is far from being the "golden gateway to supreme education" as perceived. Instead, the user argued that it is quite the opposite. The post has gained traction amid ongoing discussions about the impact of the global slowdown on IIT placements. Earlier reports suggested that 36% of students were yet to secure jobs, but the institute countered this with an exit survey conducted among its students.

Reflecting on their experience at India's top institute, the Reddit user expressed dissatisfaction, saying, "I feel lost and do not have the enthusiasm in the same manner that I had during my JEE days. The grading system here is so heavily dependent on the subjectivity of the TA's (Teaching Assistants) that it defeats the whole purpose of education."

The post continued, "People outside of this college (including my parents) think of it as a 'golden gateway to supreme education', but it is exactly the opposite."

NDTV cannot independently verify the post, but it has garnered significant attention online, receiving nearly 100 comments and close to 250 votes on Reddit.

One commenter shared their own sentiment, saying, "I am doing civil in an old IIT and I feel the same, I don't even remember why I used to study during JEE times. Idk whom it was that I wanted to prove my worth. Everything feels very useless all of a sudden idk why... and what I should do about it."

Another commenter offered advice, "Try not to get disenchanted with the system. Try putting in your best and then leave the rest. Relax and be cool. Later in life, when you look back, you will relish these memories. The entire process makes you mentally stronger to handle much bigger setbacks. Try lasting thru it and simply try enjoying it. Don't take it so hard. You will be fine."

Users from various colleges shared their own experiences and disenchantment with the education system.

Earlier this month, a report in Hindustan Times claimed that approximately 712 out of the 2,000 registered students at IIT Bombay were still without job offers. However, IIT Bombay released a survey countering the report, clarifying that only 6.1% of graduates are looking for jobs, while the majority of students (57.1%) secured jobs through the institute's placement process.
