Former England captain Michael Vaughan suggests that Mumbai Indians' batsman Rohit Sharma could potentially join Chennai Super Kings (CSK) before the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rohit's future with MI has been a topic of discussion since the franchise replaced him as captain, appointing Hardik Pandya in his place. This decision has not been well-received by fans, as evidenced by Hardik facing criticism and jeers even from home supporters during matches this season.
While speculation swirls around Rohit Sharma's potential release from MI ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, Michael Vaughan envisions CSK as a probable destination for the star batsman.
"Could Rohit Sharma head to Chennai and replace Dhoni? Gaikwad is currently handling the captaincy, which could be a temporary role until Rohit takes over next year. I can see him fitting in well at Chennai," Vaughan shared on the BeerBiceps podcast.
For context, CSK recently underwent a leadership change as MS Dhoni passed the captaincy baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad.
The podcast host expressed concern over Rohit's possible move to CSK, citing potential heartbreak for MI fans. "That would be tough for MI supporters. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing him join Hyderabad; he has history with Deccan Chargers, which would add a romantic touch."
Reflecting on the captaincy dynamics at MI, Vaughan voiced support for Hardik but suggested that Rohit should have retained the captain's role.
"Hardik is facing a challenging situation, not of his making. Accepting the captaincy at Mumbai Indians is an opportunity every Indian cricketer desires. MI has faced challenges recently, and I believe communication may have been lacking."
"In my view, Rohit should have continued as captain. Hardik's return to MI carries enough pressure, and considering Rohit's stature as India's T20 captain, it would have been wise to have him lead MI with Hardik's future in mind," Vaughan opined.
