Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has unveiled his squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Americas, and it notably excludes star all-rounder Hardik Pandya. With the squad selection deadline looming, Harbhajan has named his preferred 15 players for the tournament, omitting not just Pandya but also other notable names like Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer. Despite being sidelined due to workload management, Harbhajan didn't hesitate to include IPL's emerging sensation Mayank Yadav.
Mayank, renowned for consistently breaching the 150kmph mark, has showcased his prowess in just two appearances, claiming six wickets. Harbhajan's endorsement adds to a growing chorus of former players advocating for Mayank's selection.
In the batting lineup, Harbhajan opted for Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal as openers, followed by Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav at positions 3 and 4, respectively. Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson were chosen as the designated wicketkeepers, with Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube rounding off the finishers' slots.
Harbhajan prioritized depth in the bowling department, selecting seven players, including the versatile Ravindra Jadeja. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were his primary spin options, complemented by pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, and Mayank.
Reports suggest that the BCCI selectors will convene with head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma to deliberate on the final World Cup squad later this week. With the submission deadline set for May 1, the tournament is scheduled to commence on June 2 in the Americas, with India's inaugural match against Ireland on June 5.
