Heatwave 2024: School Closure, Adjusted Class Hours, and Early Summer Break Declared

As per the forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), El Niño conditions have initiated this April, leading to heatwave conditions in various parts of India. Consequently, schools are either closing temporarily, advancing summer vacations, or adjusting their schedules.

Here's the rundown of states where schools are affected:

Jharkhand:
The Department of School Education and Literacy, Jharkhand, has announced the closure of all schools up to Class 8 until further notice. For classes 9 to 12, the timings have been modified to 7 am to 11.30 am. Outdoor activities such as prayers and sports are also suspended.

Bihar:
In Patna district, academic activities for Class 10 are prohibited from 10.30 am to 4 pm, while for Class 11 and 12, the restriction is from 11.30 am to 4 pm until May 8, due to the intense heatwave.

West Bengal:
Summer vacations for government and government-aided schools in West Bengal have been advanced to start from April 22, excluding Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. Private schools are also encouraged to follow suit.

Maharashtra:
All primary, middle, and higher schools in Maharashtra have declared an early vacation due to the heatwave. Schools will reopen on June 15, except for the Vidarbha region, where they will reopen on June 30.

Chhattisgarh:
An early summer vacation has been announced for all government, aided, and non-aided schools in Chhattisgarh, extending from April 22 to June 15, to safeguard students' health during the ongoing heatwave.

Delhi:
To address the rising temperatures, the Delhi government has mandated summer vacation for all government-aided schools from May 1 to June 15. Several preventive measures are outlined in a circular, including restrictions on outdoor activities during afternoons and provisions for clean drinking water and first-aid kits.

Other states like Tripura and Meghalaya have also implemented measures such as school closures and modified timings to mitigate the effects of the heatwave on students.
