David Warner Suggests IPL High Scores Unlikely in World Cup

Australia's David Warner believes that the T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies won't witness the same towering scores seen in this year's Indian Premier League, characterized by flat pitches. Despite the IPL featuring monumental totals, including Sunrisers Hyderabad breaking records with scores of 277 and 287, Warner anticipates a different scenario at the global event.

Warner, drawing from his experience in the Caribbean Premier League, expects pitches in the West Indies to offer something for the bowlers, with slower and turning tracks being a possibility.

"The wickets tend to get a little bit lower and slower," Warner noted, hinting at the nature of pitches in the West Indies compared to the high-scoring surfaces seen in the IPL.

While Australian batters like Travis Head and Jake Fraser-McGurk have thrived in the IPL, Warner emphasized the importance of anchoring innings in the West Indies, citing the need for a batsman to play the role of an anchor amid potentially challenging conditions.

"Even when we played there in the 2010 World Cup, the pitches weren't high-scoring," Warner recalled, highlighting the different dynamics of batting in the West Indies.

Warner also pointed out the impact of natural elements and the scheduling of predominantly day games in the West Indies, factors that could significantly influence the style of play in the tournament.

While Hyderabad has been prolific in the IPL with their batting firepower, Warner acknowledged the role of favorable conditions in enabling high-scoring encounters. However, he noted that historical factors like turn in pitches used to limit scoring opportunities in the past, suggesting a shift in conditions in recent times.

"The wickets have been very good. They've been very flat, very compact and very high-scoring," Warner remarked, highlighting the current trend in pitch conditions favoring batsmen in T20 cricket.
