Ruturaj Gaikwad's inaugural stint as captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a journey of highs and lows. Assuming leadership from the iconic MS Dhoni ahead of the IPL 2024 opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gaikwad steered CSK to four victories in his initial eight matches. Initially, with four wins in their first six outings, CSK seemed to be on a promising trajectory. However, successive losses to Lucknow Super Giants in their recent encounters have brought Gaikwad's captaincy under scrutiny.
Criticism mounted after their recent defeat at home to LSG, where Marcus Stoinis' aggressive batting laid bare CSK's bowling weaknesses, leading to questions about Gaikwad's tactical decisions.
As reported by MensXP, former CSK batsman Ambati Rayudu was purported to have voiced concerns about Gaikwad's captaincy and field placements, particularly in the crucial death overs.
"Poor field placements in death overs by Ruturaj (Gaikwad). We clearly saw a lack of experience as captain," Rayudu was quoted as allegedly remarking on Star Sports.
In the same discussion, former Indian batsman Navjot Singh Sidhu reportedly argued that if MS Dhoni is credited for CSK's victories, he should also bear criticism for their defeats.
"If you credit Dhoni for CSK wins then blame him for the losses too. Dhoni is still the main think tank," Sidhu was quoted as saying.
However, Rayudu has denied these allegations, refuting claims of making any such remarks about Gaikwad, CSK, or Dhoni.
Taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Ambati rebuked the publication, stating: "I was not even commentating on the said day.. I was at my farm picking mangoes.. please be responsible when writing something.. don't spread nonsense."
Following consecutive losses to LSG, CSK has slipped out of playoff contention and currently occupies fifth position. Their next challenge awaits against SRH on Sunday.
